If all else fails, a repair-in-place is supposed to be one of the best ways to get Windows Update working again (I think the KB problem was acknowledged by MS so if I had been more patient perhaps a further update from MS would have cured the problem by itself-if nothing else, 21H1, which is supposed to arrive this coming Patch Tuesday). The repair was nothing to do with MSFS but because a recent failed KB broke Windows Update on the computer I use for MSFS but strangely on no other computer. I did a repair-in-place on April 15th using the Media Creation Tool and an ISO of 20H2 mounted as a virtual drive. All mods in the Community Folder were unchanged. Specifically, for Microsoft Flight Simulator, everything was exactly as it should be. It may just be my imagination, but after the repair install, my system just seems to run more smoothly.

I would also recommend that immediately after you do the repair install you should create a new system restore point and then delete all the older ones, if any, still left on your system. There was one optional update (KB5001391) which I had been unable to install before the repair which the repair update did not touch (because it was “optional”) which I was able to download and install successfully after the repair update.

After the upgrade, the only thing I did was run the Microsoft Store download and update and the Windows Update to check to see that everything was updated to the latest version. You end up with an installation of the latest version of Windows 10. In essence, a repair installs replaces all the Windows 10 system files with new copies of those files downloaded during the repair intall and, if you pick the option during setup, it will download and install the most current installed Windows updates which are not marked as optional. I was running Windows 20H2 and had the necessary update installed, so for me the answer was a joyous “YES.” If you have Windows 10 version 20H2 installed, then it is required to have KB4586853 for build 19042.662 or higher installed to be able to do a repair install and keep everything. You must be signed in as an administrator to do a repair install of Windows 10.PLEASE NOTEAt the bottom of the web page there are two important notes: Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade | Tutorials () Here is a link to the Windows 10 Forums site where most of your questions will be answered.
